The squash has seen many and various uses throughout history. In German, it is called Kùrbis, in France it is known as Courge, Spain calls it Zapallo,chayote or calabaza. In the United States of America , it is known as pumpkin.
The squash are fruit’s of various vines (Cucurbita pepo L.) of the botanical family Cucurbitaceae. It comes in many shapes. The rind vary in colour from green ,white, orange yellow, black or purple. But their pulp or flesh is generally yellow or orange with seed filled center. They grow in hot,humid regions of the world.
Squash can be prepared in three major ways. -Baked: The squash is cut and baked in oven until it turns golden brown. It can be eaten with honey or fruit. -Cooked : it can be used in soup and stews. -Puree: after cooking the squash is blended. It may be sweetened with honey or milk.
Squash has high hypotensive, diuretic, laxative and anticarcinogenic properties. They are highly recommended in cure and control of the following :
HYPERTENSION : Squash are very low in sodium and high in potassium which prevents hypertension and it’s negative effects. Hypertensive patients may eat squash daily without adding salt. Daylong intake is advised for a period of one month.
CORONARY AFFECTIONS AND ARTERIOSCLEROSIS :Due to minimal fat and sodium in squash , and its abundance in provitamin A, (beta-carotene ) which protects the arterial walls, squash is advised for those who want a functional artery. They should eat squash at least three times in a week.
RENAL DISORDER :Squash acts as a mild diuretic. It increases urine production and elimination of liquid from the body. In the cases of inflammatory disorders of the kidney, edema, renal failure, squash is highly adviced.
CANCER PREVENTION : Squash contains three effective anticarcinogenic vegetable based substances. Beta carotene , vitamin c and fiber. Those who has a history of hereditarycancer should not remove squash in their daily food. Those who have been diagnosed and in cancer treatment should make it a priority to take squash Puree every morning. An hour before meal.
