According to Al Jazeera English, not less than eight people have been killed near the entrance of Russian embassy in Kabul Afghanistan. The information said that a suicide bomber detonated explosives near the Russian Kabul embassy.
However, Nh1 News later stated that twenty Afghan civilians and two Russian Diplomats were killed in the unfortunate incidence.
The report further stated that the suicide bomber blew himself up outside the Russian embassy following Talibans inability to provide security in the diplomatic area of Kabul.
An eyewitness reports the explosion occurred 11.00am Monday September 5th 2022.
The eye witness says the blast took place as Russian visa applicants mostly students gathered in front of the consular department of the embassy for submission of their visa application forms which happens at 8.00am daily.
Nevertheless, Russian Foreign Ministry says two of its’ staff were killed in the incident.
So far, no comments have been made by Talibans regarding the misfortune.
KFVS-TV says the blast occurred when a Russian diplomat came out to call out the names of the applicants awaiting visa procedure.
News Of Bahrain media says the attacker was shot dead by armed guards as he approached the gate before reaching his target. Otherwise, the casualty would have been extremely higher.
Meanwhile, the Russian Prime Minister, Sergey Lavrov said security has been beefed at their embassy in Kabul with additional Afghan intelligence and counter intelligence forces deployed.
The foreign minister was quoted thus
Let’s hope that the organizers and perpetrators of this terrorist attack face swift and deserved punishment.
Russia is one of the few nations that maintained an embassy in Kabul since the Talibans took over Afghanistan.
Nevertheless, there was earlier fear that Russia might launch a reprisal attack especially now that every attack on her citizens is seen from the negative angle based on the Russian/Ukrainian war.
But the comment of the foreign minister, Lavrov has removed this fear totally. Alocal source said.
